  1. Greek `transfer' figure of speech using an
  2. analogy or close comparison between two
  3. things that are not normally treated as if
  4. they had anything in common. Metaphor is a
  5. common means of extending the uses and
  6. references of words. See also simile. If we
  7. call people cabbages or foxes, we are
  8. indicating that in our opinion they share
  9. certain qualities with those vegetables or
  10. animals: an inert quality in the case of
  11. cabbages, a cunning quality in the case of
  12. foxes, which may lead on to calling people
  13. `foxy' and saying `He really foxed them that
  14. time', meaning that he tricked them. If a
  15. scientist is doing research in the field of
  16. nuclear physics, the word `field' results
  17. from comparison between scientists and
  18. farmers (who literally work in fields). Such
  19. usages are metaphorical.
